I've never run a marathon, can I train with the Y Marathon Club?

Absolutely! We have a 100% success rate with first time marathon runners. We’ll provide you with the training and support to achieve your goal.

What marathons do you train for?

We have proven 14 week training programmes for the Auckland and Rotorua Marathon’s.

SUNDAY LONG PACK RUNS

Can I try a pack run before joining?

Yes, we permit 2 trial Sunday long pack runs

What should I bring to my first pack run?

Wear comfortable running/walking shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather. We have collapsible cups (for frequent water stops) and fuel for sale at the club. And, if you plan on showering at the club post run, a towel, toiletries and change of clothes.

Where do I park?

FREE Sunday pack run parking at the Auckland Y gym carpark, when you display your Y Marathon Club Bumper Sticker. Ask for one at the club.

How do I join a training pack?

Come along to the Club at Cnr Pitt Street & Greys Ave, Auckland CBD any Sunday: Our Sunday pack run start time is 7:00 AM.

WALKERS PLEASE NOTE: start times vary throughout the year, especially during training buildup periods. To ensure you have the correct start time, particularly if you are a new walker, please contact us directly. We have different groups of walkers, including those covering shorter distances who may start at 7:00 AM.

Do I need to wear the club singlet/t shirt on pack runs?

Yes! If you’ve joined the Y, you will need to wear your club shirt. It ensures safety, unity, and club visibility during pack runs. You can purchase the distinctive club singlet/t shirt here.

What happens if I can't keep up with my pack?

Our packs are designed to be supportive and inclusive. If you find the pace too challenging, our pack leaders will provide guidance and support, and you can always adjust your pace or move to a different pack.

Are there training sessions for walkers?

Yes! We have dedicated walking packs and training plans designed to meet the needs of walkers of all levels.

MEMBERSHIP

What does membership cost?

$90 per annum for full membership, $35 for associate membership.

How do I sign up for membership?

How do I pay for my membership/uniform?

We accept credit card and bank transfer online. We also accept cash at the club on Sunday morning.

What is the membership duration?

1 April to 31 March annually.

Is the yellow club uniform stopping you from joining?

We know the yellow is bold, but that's the point! When you're digging deep in a marathon, hearing 'Go the Y!' from the sidelines—thanks to that distinctive yellow—will give you the boost you need. Join us for the incredible support and training, and you'll soon appreciate the power of that yellow uniform.

LYDIARD TRAINING

What is the Lydiard training method?

The Lydiard method is a proven training philosophy developed by legendary New Zealand running coach Arthur Lydiard. It focuses on building a strong aerobic base, incorporating hill training, and emphasising long, steady runs.

How does the club adapt the Lydiard method for different abilities?
